‘On The Spectrum’ Autism Film Festival special trip

Hello there you lovely neurodiverse lot,

In a super-duper special edition of the monthly London Autism film club, at 12.30 – 2 pm on Saturday 7 December a club member’s only FREE subtitled screening of FROSTED GLASS with a Q&A to follow! 😊 Doors will open 30 minutes before the scheduled screen time at 12 noon.

Screening in the lovely, welcoming surrounds of Deptford Cinema (39 Deptford Broadway), FROSTED GLASS (54 minutes) is the award-winning drama about the realities of living on the autism spectrum. Written by Antony Fairweather, a London-based filmmaker and artist with Asperger’s Syndrome and directed by the Grammy-nominated director Ben Cole. This screening will be in subtitles, and the sound will be adjusted accordingly to suit people’s preferences. Lighting will be dimmed, and off entirely for the film.

With autism often referred to as an ‘invisible disability’, FROSTED GLASS will be followed by a brief discussion of the film and the issues it brings to light on the many obstacles those on the spectrum are faced with daily when having to live in a world wired for ‘neurotypicals’.

We are also delighted to announce that the multilingual Polish-British actress Julia Krynke will be giving a short talk about her own experiences of autism. Among other projects, Julia appeared in the BBC drama THE A WORD as Maya Petrenko, the babysitter to Joe, a young boy on the autism spectrum. Immediately following this event at 2 pm, there will be a day-long programme of screenings at the venue as part of the ‘On The Spectrum Festival’, a festival showcasing the best work of film-makers who are anywhere and everywhere on the Autistic Spectrum.

If any people would like to stay on to attend these screenings then they are of course welcome to, however, please bear in mind that these will be paid screenings, with prices starting at £4.50 for students.

Issues relating to anxiety and sensory concerns will be considered, and people attending do not have to have a formal diagnosis, they may have self-diagnosed or simply suspect themselves of being Autistic.

If you would like to take a friend, partner or facilitator as +1 that’s quite alright, so long as they respect and support the aims of the group. The exclusive special edition of the autism film club will be held in the downstairs cinema space of Deptford Cinema (39 Deptford Broadway).

The cinema is located straight ahead upon entering the front door and is the first door on the left in the basement area. Toilets are at the end of the corridor to the right on the ground floor. Adequate signage will be present on the day.

So, come on down if you can, and take a friend with you too!
