Silence Speaks Volumes: Language & Autism
February means films here at Citizen Autistic (just like every month, I hear you say!), and to provide a welcome antidote to all those shlocky, schmaltzy romances that are always out this time of year, I present all you lovely screen junkies with a special ‘watch along’ session of short film delights: DUKE + SILENT THINGS, at 8 pm on Thursday, 17 February!
Run time: A lean, mean 50 minutes for all three short films (two fiction and one documentary short), with the entire session expecting to last no longer than approx. 1 hour to allow for any delays.
DUKE (2018) – synopsis: The story of a non-verbal teen on the autism spectrum who has pronounced struggles communicating with the outside world, yet who none the less must find his voice to prevent a family already strained to its limits from snapping altogether.
Not dissimilar both in story and spirit to the Australian feature film The Black Balloon made a decade earlier in 2008, Duke will be immediately followed by a mini documentary charting the real-life story informing the film featuring talking heads from Duke’s own friends and family.
+ SILENT THINGS (2010) – synopsis: Starring Antonia Campbell-Hughes (Kelly + Victor) and Andrew Scott (Sherlock, Pride), Silent Things is a tender snapshot of a companionship between an autistic man and woman on a remote stretch of coastline that comes under threat when an impulsive teen arrives on the scene unannounced and uninvited.
