Sat 16 Sept: Saturday Social – Withnail & I Film-Themed Jaunt!

I’m in a park and I’m practically dead; what good’s the countryside?’ – Withnail

Saturday Social – Withnail & I Wander

Off the back of previous film-themed weekend walks I am thinking it would be a rather agreeable idea for a bunch of us to go on a jolly jaunt across Central London tracing the path of the real-life locations used in the much-loved and endlessly quotable British comedy classic Withnail & I!

Timings: This walk will likely take a little longer than those previous, taking in more distinct points of interest. As such, I am allowing for 3 hours – 10:30 am – 1:30 pm.

Route & Points of Interest: We will all meet outside Wood Green station at 10:30 am. I will allow 5-10 minute grace period for any of those arriving slightly later than this before we all set off for the first key filming location of interest.

The walk will be split into two sections, the first will commence from Wood Lane station before passing via the first key film location, Freston Road. We will head east to the next point of interest on Tavistock Crescent.

The second section of the walk will involve us walking to Westbourne Park tube station (5 mins). From here we will take a short tube ride (approx. 10 minutes, 5 stops) on either the Circle Line or Hammersmith & City line to Great Portland Street.

The final passage will involve a short walk of approx. 0.5 miles from Great Portland Street to the third and final location seen in the film on ‘The Broad Walk’ in Regent’s Park. This last point of interest is also close to where the film’s final sequence took place behind London Zoo.

***Important***- The tube ride will only be a short, ten-minute trip, however if at all uncomfortable with riding on the London Underground for sensory or other reasons then I would urge you to please reconsider joining, or ducking out at this stage of the walk if desired.

Withnail & I (1987): In 1969, two substance-abusing, unemployed actors retreat to the countryside for a holiday that proves disastrous. As a side note, the film was produced by Handmade Films, a company founded by none other than George Harrison. 15 Certificate.

Again, as always with these more informal social events, people are of course free to come and go when they please, and people in attendance are entirely responsible for their own safety and security. For instance, as the route will involve a short tube journey, any not comfortable with this can choose to join for the first section only if wished.

I look forward to seeing all you fleshy, warm blooded humanoids come Saturday, 16,

Shine on,
