Saturday Social: Star Wars Andor (2022) Film Themed Jaunt: Episode 2

A (not so) long time ago in a city that’s actually really rather close for many
… The Star Wars spin-off television series Andor (2022 – present) was shot, with several key scenes filmed using real locations across London.

So, with that in mind, and season two in production this year only for cast and crew to be told to ‘down tools’ amid the ongoing writers strike, back by (I hope?) popular demand I am proposing a further film-themed jaunt.

Andor – Key Locations: I propose we visit TWO locations to feature in the series – the Barbican Centre (a short walk from St. Paul’s cathedral), and the Brunswick Centre in the Bloomsbury area.

Andor – One-line Synopsis: In a dangerous era, Cassian Andor embarks on a path destined to turn him into a rebel hero.

The Brunswick Centre – This building served as the ‘cold and oppressive apartment complex in which Syril Karn’s (Kyle Soller) mother lives’ supposedly typical of Coruscantian architecture.

The Barbican Centre – ‘Was used to film scenes featuring Kleya Marki (Elizabeth Dalu) and Vel Sartha (Faye Marsay) meeting on Coruscant following the events of Aldhani.’

Google Maps – Walking Route: – https://bit.ly/3OhwYdu

Part one: We will commence our walk directly outside the Curzon Bloomsbury, itself part of the Brunswick Centre complex, before strolling towards the main shopping centre (without going in).

Part two: After looking around we shall then make our way by foot towards the Barbican Centre, so from one centre to another! This walk is 1.7 miles according to Google Maps and will take approx. 35-40 minutes. If anyone is not comfortable with walking in the city centre then please think again about joining.

Part three (or ‘Episode III?!): On arriving at the Barbican Centre complex we will proceed to look around the site as with the Brunswick Centre, hopefully identifying exact spots where filming took place.

Optional extra: For those that wish to join me, I will then head to Barbican Kitchen for lunch – this is a restaurant within the main Barbican building (to the right as you enter the main entrance). More info: https://www.barbican.org.uk/your-visit/eat-drink/barbican-kitchen

Timings: 11 am – 1pm.

NB: I realise that there may be many who are not familiar and/or interested in Andor and the Star Wars series, however, as this walk will be at least as concerned with enjoying architectural details and sights there will likely still be plenty for others to enjoy besides the film connections.

I really hope to see some familiar and not so familiar humanoids on Sat 12 and feel free to bring a friend or facilitator as a +1 as well!

May the forks be with you,
